Business Degree Program

Ohio State Lima Means Business!

Recognizing the need for a quality four-year business degree in the region, The Ohio State University at Lima has formed a partnership with the Ohio State Fisher College of Business to bring an internationally-accredited undergraduate degree in business to Lima. Students will register and take all of their classes at Ohio State Lima while paying the lower regional campus tuition rate. Students can now enroll at Ohio State Lima to begin the business program. Students who successfully complete the program will receive an Ohio State business degree designed specifically around the unique needs of regional campuses and the smaller urban communities that serve them.

TOP RANKED BUSINESS PROGRAM

U.S. News and World Report "American’s Best Colleges" Year 2000 Guide ranked Fisher College’s undergraduate program 16th nationally. In addition a 2001 Wall Street Journal survey ranked the Fisher College’s MBA program 14th nationally. Its undergraduate, MBA and Ph.D. programs are accredited by the AACSB – The International Association for Management Education, the same organization that accredits the Harvard, Stanford and Wharton schools of business, among others.

BUSINESS DEGREE DETAILS

  • The courses and delivery methods have been tailored to meet the needs of those who aspire to careers in business or who already hold positions in Ohio’s small and midsize firms.
  • The majority of the core business classes will be taught by Fisher College of Business faculty using a blend of traditional classroom settings, distance learning and Internet capabilities.
  • To accommodate the needs of working and other nontraditional students, most of the classes for the Business Degree will be taught in the late afternoons and evenings.
  • Business classes will include the group work typical of business education and the business environment itself, with each member of the class contributing to the whole team product.
  • In addition to traditional classroom interaction, faculty will hold online office hours and drop in to online chat rooms to review the stream of conversation and comment or respond to questions or issues raised.

GENERAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND BUSINESS COURSES

Most students will enroll at Ohio State and begin taking General Education Curriculum requirements. The GEC is a group of courses from the following areas of academic study: writing and related skills, quantitative and logical skills, culture/international experience, social diversity, natural sciences, social sciences, art and humanities.

Upon completing certain grade and general course requirements, students can then apply for acceptance into the Fisher College of Business. In addition, students will begin courses in the business major after completing the General Education Curriculum requirements and business foundation courses.

The business major consists of 13 junior and senior level classes, about half of which are core business courses and the rest, general business electives. There are two additional junior level classes that will be taught utilizing traditional methods of instruction on the Lima campus.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of The Ohio State University with a General Business Degree will be prepared to enter a wide variety of management, administrative and staff careers in the private sector, the public sector and non-profit organizations. This degree also is an excellent avenue for the entrepreneur and small business owner.

Specialized degrees such as accounting, finance, marketing, operations and computer information systems allow a person to focus on one segment of business. However, the General Business Degree allows for a student to take courses in all major business areas. This provides a greater degree of versatility and flexibility when it comes to career choices.

LINKAGE WITH BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

A critical partnership between education and industry in the area is necessary to serve students and the community successfully. The Business Degree Program’s Advisory Committee is composed of executives and managers within various sectors of business and industry, as well as representatives from the Lima Campus. The primary mission of the Advisory Committee is to assist in the promotion and direction of the General Business Degree at The Ohio State University at Lima.

Though continued growth and development, the Business Degree Program will also offer internship and recruitment opportunities, lecture series events and seminars, and student business club involvement.
