Laboratory Facilities and Equipment

The modern student laboratory, Sciences 321, has bench space for lab sections of twenty-four yo thirty-two students. Most lab sections run with approximately 20-24 students. Each student has access to an individual fume hood and equipment drawer; some shared equipment is kept in cabinets. There are several styles of analytical balances as well as open pan balances. The laboratory is equipped with computer and audio-visual technology so that presentations may be made on a large central screen. An infrared spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph are available for use in the more advanced laboratory courses. Hot plates, magnetic stirrers, pH meters, and digital spectrophotometers are all available to use in the general chemistry courses. Desktop computers are situated inside the lab and in the adjoining instrument room. These computers are available for science student use throughout the day. Laptop computers are also used in the laboratory.

Elementary Chemistry Laboratory/Chemistry 101 and 102 and 101C/102CThe laboratory is connected to a specific lecture section. For 101 and 102C lab times are selected from a list of possiblilities by scheduling with the course instructor. Laboratory sections meet once each week for a three hour session throughout the term. Students may work in pairs, or individually. Lab reports usually involve reporting gathered data, making calculations, and drawing conclusions from the data. Some experiments are computer-based and report entry sometimes involving using computers. (back to top)

General Chemistry/Chemistry 121, 122, 123, and 125 The laboratory is connected to a specific lecture section. Laboratory sections meet once each week for a three hour session throughout the term for Chemistry 121, 122, and125. Chemistry 123 labs meet two days each week for six total lab hours with some experiments requiring multiple lab sessions to complete. Students work individually. Lab reports usually involve reporting gathered data, making calculations, and drawing conclusions from the data. Purpose statements, sample calculations, and graphing are also part of most reports. A specialized laboratory notebook is used to store raw data and may also be used for reports and graphing. Report entry sometimes involves using computers.(back to top)

Organic Chemistry Laboratory/Chemistry 254 and 255 The organic chemistry laboratory courses are separate from the lecture courses. A passing grade in Chemistry 251 is required for entry into Organic Laboratory 254. Laboratory sections meet twice each week for a three hour hour session preceeded by a half hour lab lecture; sometimes the lecture portion will be one hour on one of the lab days instead of broken into two segments. Students work individually. Some experiments require multiple lab sessions to complete. Lab reports usually involve reporting gathered data, characteristics of the important reactants and products, procedure and technique summaries, analysis of the products, and drawing conclusions from the data. A formal laboratory notebook is used to store raw data and is also used for reports. (back to top)
