SMART Social Studies - Graduate and Undergraduate

Professional Development Workshop

It is very important to research and find every resource available to teachers, students and the community. These websites in this online workshop will assist you in many ways. Keep in mind that you are working on this course to strengthen your abilities. Each participant in the course works at their own pace and should check in with the instructor as often as needed to get assistance.

This is the 727.50 & 692.28  course web page for you to begin your online course work in SMART Social Studies.

To begin follow the instructions below.

You may need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these files on this web site. Select here to locate the application.Adobe

Select here to return to the Online Workshop course lists

Your first task is to spend about 1 to 2 hours investigating the web sites on our links page. On the left side of the web page you will find all types of resources dealing with SMARTBoards and Interactive Whiteboards and how to use them in the classroom. If you have a SMARTBoard or Interactive Whiteboard you will want to take some time looking over these resources. However, If you currently do not have a SMARTBoard or Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) you will want to go directly to the links on the right side of the web page. These links are all Social Study resource links that will work will with a computer hooked to a projector or resources that would give students interactive activities and lesson plans for teaching and learning in Social Studies

Your second task is to begin with speaking or emailing your instructor to discuss the projects or lesson you have in mind. Together we will brain storm idea on projects or lesson that you would like to pursue.  You will be able to discuss with Sue or Rafe the ideas you have on lessons or creating your own Notebook lessons. Or taking a lesson you found from someone else and reworking it to meet the needs of your students.

Your third task is to create a log or journal of the hours you spend working on this course. I do not need to have a long description.

    • ie: Searching for ideas on how to use Smart Activities in your classroom - 4/2/2009 - 2 hours
    • Working on project one or lesson plan one- 4/16/09 - 1.5 hours
    • etc.

Fourth Task - Lets begin your assignments for this course. I will be working with each of you to determine what lesson plan(s) or projects you will be putting your efforts on. Take time to work on either your project(s) or lesson plan(s). If you have any questions please email or call.

If you are taking this course for the first time. You are taking Smart Social Studies You will need to include the following information for each quarter hour.

    • One lesson plan or one project per quarter hour you are taking.
    • Assessment(s)-  as needed for a lesson plan. If you have a project do a sample for your instructor
    •  Any additional materials - as needed
    • Web resources used to support your lessons or project - please include a list of all the web sites you used to work on your lesson plan or project. You may use other peoples lessons or projects. Just remember to give them credit and customize the lesson to work for your students in your classroom. Each classroom has a unique group of students so the lesson plan(s) you create will be unique to your class.

So if you have taken this 727.50 Workshop for 4 graduate quarter hours.... You will be creating 4  lesson plans  or projects with support materials and assessments. (you may also mix these up. One Lesson plan and 1 project for 2 credit hours)  Making sure to document the resources you have used for these lessons or projects. (I encourage you to use other materials you have uses as well, just include them in your resource list.)

I have sample lesson plans and a lesson plan template for you to review if you need assistance.  However, many of my participants will use their own format for writing lesson plans as long as they include:  Goals, objectives, processes/procedure, Web links, the Ohio Content Standards, benchmarks and indicators when available.

Documents you may want to download as helper files. (Please understand you do not have to use this format. It is one that I use with my undergraduates.)

    • Lesson plan template - in PDF format
    • You really can use your own format - however, I often have teachers ask me what I am looking for or they would like a sample. Let me know if you want more than the template.
