It is very important to research and find every resource available to teachers, students and the community. These websites in this online workshop will assist you in many ways. Keep in mind that you are working on this course to strengthen your abilities. Each participant in the course works at their own pace and should check in with the instructor as often as needed to get assistance.

Your first task is to spend about 1 to 2 hours investigating the web sites on our WebQuest links resource page.. I want this to be an overview. Do not worry about spending lots of time on any one page. I just want you to jump around and see if you have any problems viewing the pages. Please email me if you are having problems with viewing any of the main (or 1st pages) on this web site.

    http://lima.osu.edu/academics/education/ed_basicwebpage.html

Your second task is to begin with  going to the following web site and listening to my podcast on WebQuests . You will be listening to a podcast on how to create a WebQuest - I do this same assignment in my P&L 370 class. So the steps are all here in this podcast. When I mention that you are to get the template from Carmen. You will just download it here from this web page. The document will be in Microsoft Office Word. In a compatible format for all users. You can only use Microsoft office to do this course work. If you do not have it.... please contact Sue for the Microsoft Open Office link. It is more limited but it can be used.

Also... you will need to have a high speed band-width to listen to this podcast. If you do not have a good speed. You can skip this step. However, this is an excellent way to get started. I do highly recommend listening to my podcast on WebQuest.

Your third task is to create a log or journal of the hours you spend working on this course. I do not need to have a long description.

    • ie: Searching for WebQuest Ideas  - 4/2/2009 - 2 hours
    • Working on webquest- 4/16/09 - 1.5 hours
    • etc.

Your fourth task is to begin researching areas that you want to do a WebQuest on.. There are 1000's of resources available here for all grade levels. If you have any difficulty finding resources please contact your instructor right away. Go to our WebQuest resources page http://lima.osu.edu/academics/education/ed_basicwebpage.html  and select the WebQuest information for links and resources. You should browse through these resources and see if anyone has a topic that maybe similar to  yours. You can get great link resources from others. And if they have a WebQuest that fits your needs in your classroom. You will not need to do this WebQuest for your students. You can save this link for another time and select a new topic for our class.

5th Task - Lets begin your assignments for this course. Open your WebQuest file that you downloaded. Now see if you can follow the directions that I have included in this document. Save the file often. Here is what I would like you to do.

    1. Create a folder on your computer
    2.  Save the webquest.doc in your new folder with the same name.
    3. Now resave the same document again with the following format. WQ_lastname.doc or WQ_lastname.docx (the docx is for the people who are using Office 2007 PC or 2008 for the Mac.)
    4. It is important to always save your files with the following formatting.
      • No spaces
      • No characters other than numbers or letters
      • Keep file names as short as possible. Always under 11 characters
      • When saving a image. It must be saved as a jpeg, jpg or gif file format (same rules above for file names)
      • Keep all files images and your documents in the same folder
    5. Now open the file that you have named WQ_lastname
    6. You will notice this file is all done with in a large table format. Please do not removed the table. You need to use this table to keep your words and images from flying all over the page when it is posted on the Internet.
      • Each image used must be in its very own cell.
      • Text must be in its own cell as well.
      • If you mix the two the words and images will not stay in their correct spaces. You could have words cut in half and images jumping all over the page.
      • I have only included text in this example. The only graphic I have used is a background graphic. That is not what I recommend. Graphics are an important part of the WebQuest. Later you will see examples of what I am suggesting.
    7. If you have decided on your topic now it is time to look for web resources that will support the learning you wish the students to use or locate.
      • Where do I find good resources?
      • Maybe you already have some. Use them.
      • Look on my WebQuest resource links page for some great resources.
    8. Begin to take the WQ_lastname file and start writing. It is very important that you write this lesson as you were speaking to the students in your class. Keep the vocabulary age appropriate. You may have to read some of the page to students. However, it still should be written in age appropriate language.
      • Do not be concerned with graphics at this point.

6th Task - After  you have a rough draft. Email it to me. I will give you feed back on what you are working on.

7th Task -  Lets discuss graphics and why we use this layout.

    1. Graphics really make the Web Page - Whether it is a WebQuest or a Web Page. However, the design must work with the idea and not be so over the top that it is distracting from the WebQuest project.
      • I will discuss ideas for background colors and designs and other graphic options when you get your WebQuest ideas underway.
      • Lots to talk about graphics, links and design issues.
      • Don't panic... it is really fun to play with graphics and color. You don't get to do that much in regular word processing documents for school.
    2. Check out my Student Examples section on the resource page.
      • I currently do not have the examples posted. I will get those up ASAP
      • You will be able to see examples of different ways teachers organized their WebQuests for students and how they used graphics to enhance the assignments.
    3. Why do I use the table layout?
      • I have been doing WebQuests using Word for many years and have found the web pages are so unpredictable if we do not use and assigned table. Sentences drag out to long and even break in strange places.
      • With the table it is organized and we have much less stress with the structure of the WebQuest.
      • Do you like to scroll back and forth from side to side? That is another reason to have a table that limits the width.
      • You also can divide up the spaces to have graphics and text in an interesting layout with the table. You can not use text boxes on the web. They float where ever they want to go. Sooo... this way you have full control of spaces and organization.

It is important that we have time to evaluate together WebQuests and web pages. We will talk about these options via email or phone as the quarter progresses.

8th - Send me your completed work. We will discuss the best way to do that individually. I will also want to step each one of you through the process of saving your file as a web page. Along with the importance of keeping the files all together and how to update them.

What do I need to do to fulfill my requirements?
