What is hospitality management?

Hospitality management is the management of people and services in the lodging, food service and tourism industries. These management positions are available in the world’s finest hotels, restaurants, meeting and convention services, theme parks, airlines and cruise lines. As tourism continues to become more global, the opportunities for growth in hospitality management careers is unlimited.

What are the career opportunities in hospitality management?

Graduates of The Ohio State University in hospitality management are prepared to enter a career in lodging, food service and tourism and travel related businesses in a management position.

The demand for better qualified and professionally trained hospitality managers continues to increase. Social, technical and demographic changes in our society indicate that the hospitality industry’s growth will extend well into the 21st century. Career advancement opportunities in hospitality extend beyond the management of individual properties. There are excellent opportunities for advancement in multi-unit management with local, national and international companies.

Salaries in the hospitality industry vary depending on location, segment of the business, and level of experience. Average entry-level compensation packages tend to be higher than other baccalaureate graduates due to the demand for individuals educated and focused on a specific industry.

What does Ohio State offer?

The hospitality management program at The Ohio State University is designed to prepare its students to accept management positions within the hospitality industry after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Management. The program encompasses all phases of the hospitality industry with a balanced business and human resource-based curriculum. Students are prepared to handle all facets of food production, employee relations, purchasing, menu planning, marketing and business and financial controls.

Two supervised internships are included in the hospitality management curriculum. Placement for internships include lodging establishments, food service operations, sales, accounting and tourism-related businesses. Internships are available with national companies such as Hyatt Hotels, Aramark, Marriott and Olive Garden, as well as locally owned and operated franchise properties.

What type of student activities are offered?

Hospitality Management students are encouraged to join the Hospitality Management Association, which is open to all students interested in the hospitality career field. HMA students are given the opportunity to interact with other students and industry professionals in group activities such as luncheons, receptions, educational programs, study tours to the annual National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago and the International Hotel and Restaurant Show in New York City.

It’s an education and business partnership

In order to be responsive to the changing needs of business practices, many reality-based class presentations are provided by hospitality industry professionals. The hospitality management program’s Advisory Committee is composed of industry management executives and includes personnel from local and national hospitality companies.

The hospitality management program attracts many companies to recruit students and graduates. This mutually beneficial partnership between education and the hospitality industry has resulted in a graduate placement rate of greater than 95 percent over the past five years.

General Degree Requirements

Most students enter University College (UVC) upon enrolling at Ohio State and remain enrolled in UVC until they have qualified for and have been accepted into their chosen major and college.

While enrolled in UVC, students begin taking courses which will meet the General Education Curriculum requirements. The GEC is a body of courses from the following seven areas of academic study: writing and related skills, quantitative and logical skills, culture/international experience, social diversity, natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities.
