Ioana Galu, Violinist and Robert Satterlee, Pianist
Monday, April 7th—Reed Hall 160
Ioana
Galu, a native of Romania, earned bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in violin performance from Gheorghe Dima Music Academy of Cluj and later served on the
faculty there as an assistant professor of violin and
chamber music. Galu has performed in master classes,
earned a scholarship for study at the Academie National de
Villecroze of France, and has been awarded prizes in
numerous national and international competitions. She
teaches at Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, N.C. and is
a member of the Eastern
Philharmonic Orchestra. Galu became Director of the
Preparatory Department at Heidelberg
College where she teaches violin and chamber music.
Robert Satterlee, Coordinator of Graduate Studies at Bowling
Green State University, holds
degrees in piano from Yale University, Peabody Conservatory
and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of
Music. Satterlee, an accomplished and
versatile solo recitalist and chamber musician, performs
regularly across the country, and has appeared on the Dame
Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago, San Francisco’s Old
First Concert Series, the Schubert Club in St. Paul and MTNA
national conventions. Satterlee has also
performed on Minnesota Public Radio. He is co-founder
of Chamber Music Quad Cities and collaborates with
members of the Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit Symphony
Orchestras in chamber music concerts. Satterlee has
been awarded many competition prizes, including honors in
the St. Louis Symphony Young Artists competition.

Ray Kamalay presents Freedom, Slavery and the Roots of American Music
MoRhodes Pernday, April 21st
ay Kamalay is singer, guitarist and leader of the group,
Red Hot Peppers. A Detroit native, Ray started playing
professionally after graduating from the University of
Detroit. While searching for the ancient Celtic muse
on the Shetland Islands, he got his first big dose of the
music of Django Reinhardt. Since then his never-ending
interest in folk music and jazz genres has only gotten
bigger. Ray has worked in collaboration with many fine
artists, including Joel Mabus, James Dapogny, Johnny Frigo,
Betty Joplin, the Chenille Sisters, Jethro Burns and Ralphe
and Howard Armstrong. In 1997, his work with the
Armstrongs was nominated for the W. C. Handy Award.

 Outside on the QUAD: AlexCuba
Monday, May 5th, 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m.
ALEXCUBA is a Cuban-born multi-instrumentalist who now makes
his home in Canada. He has brought Cuban sounds
into the mainstream. His first national TV appearance
was at age 4 and won a National Song Writing Competition in
Cuba at 18. In Canada, he teamed up with his twin
brother Adonis to record Morumba Cubana, as The Puentes
Brothers. In 2001, the album received a nomination for
a Juno award, a West Coast Music Award, and a Canadian
Independent Music Award. He departed from the Cuban
norms with his debut CD with the Alex Cuba Band, Humo De
Tabaco, earning him a Juno award for World Music Album in
2006. AlexCuba has performed for festivals in the US
and Canada and has opened for The Blind Boys of Alabama,
Cesaria Evora and Ron Sexsmith. Alex returned to the
studio with producer Joby Baker, recording his second album,
Agua Del Pozo, released in 2007.

Dr. Thomas Weis on AIDS Education
Monday, May 12th—Reed Hall 160
Dr. Thomas Weis is a retired pediatrician here in Lima.
He had a private practice for over 30 years and has been an
active volunteer in the field since his retirement. He
has dedicated much of his retirement to AIDS education.
He has spoken in many schools and been a voluntary AIDS
educator in the Turks and Caicos Islands (where he winters),
leading talks with people age 8-80, and helping young people
make smart choices. Dr. Weis will address the issues
related to AIDS awareness, health, and education. He
is a dynamic, frank, funny, and a dynamic speaker/motivator.

Michael Ricks, Singer/Songwriter

The oldest of 9 children, Michael Ricks grew up in Noble County,
Indiana and Lima, Ohio. A graduate of Lima Senior High, Mike is now
married with two children. Mike has performed music at Cornerstone
Harvest Church for the past decade. He has appeared on his pastor’s
local church TV program, New Beginnings, TV 44
fundraisers, and NBC TV 35. He wrote the lyrics and melody for the
local TV talent show Wish Upon a Song and the radio jingle for
local food chain Happy Daz, which is currently being aired on Star
92.1 FM and TV 35. Mike is a music instructor in the new YMCA YARTS
program. He now owns his own business MICHAELRICKSMUSIC and is
ready to release his first album. His style is a blend of hip-hop,
rock, jazz, folk, and country, creating a unique contemporary
Christian/Gospel sound.
