Comparative Studies 205 Literature, Film and Ethnicity In this course, we will read contemporary narratives and fiction by authors from non-English speaking backgrounds who write as "language migrants." We will view films which discuss the experiences of people of different ethnicities and races in the United States. We will explore the issues of "translating" one's self, the psychological developments involved in crossing into another culture, and the myth of the American dream. Among other shorter texts, we will read Jasmine by Bharati Mukherjee, and Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez. The course fulfills GEC requirements for literature and social diversity.
