Juglans nigra (Black Walnut)
Juglans nigra (Black Walnut). The scale bar on the above illustration is 14 cm (6 in) long. Leaves of this tree are 1-2 feet long and have a terminal leaflet that is often reduced in size. Leaves are alternate and pinnately compound. Several of these trees grow at the natural area entrance near Galvin Hall and near the entrance of the Reed Hall parking lots. This is not the same species that produces store bought walnuts, which are English Walnuts. Black Walnut seeds are edible and tasty but diabolically hard to extract in one piece.
