LLI

Institute for Learning in Retirement 2001The Lifelong Learning Institute is held in cooperation with the ELDERHOSTEL Institute Network.  The LLI offers individuals an opportunity to attend programs locally at the campus throughout the year.  It offers local people of retirement age an opportunity to come together on a regular basis.  The program's focus is its core of study groups, chosen, designed, and led by members, community people, and faculty.   There are no prerequisites, exams, or grades - rather, an opportunity to explore new ideas, expand knowledge, exercise creativity and talent in a flexile, informal, and noncompetitive environment.  There is a small fee to cover the cost of the brochure development and mailing.  Programs are usually held in October and April of each year.

10:00 – 11:30 AM Our Founding Documents: Origins, Present, and Future

We will discuss the philosophical and political background of the founding documents of the United States—the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. We will then examine the results of those documents, particularly the compromises and assumptions which helped form them on the shape of government today. Finally, we will look at possible solutions to any problems created by changes in the modern world not yet addressed by amendments to the Constitution.
Moderator: Dr. James Bode, Prof. OSU Philosophy Dept.

In the final interactive class, we will cover many ways to gather information, make decisions, and book vacation travel. The internet is a good source of details (and for booking online, if you like), but many other sources provide information about destinations, events, attractions, and highlights of specific locales. We will talk about pros and cons and how to get good value while consulting travel agents; tourism brochures and travel guides; experienced friends; guided-tour companies; state and city tourism bureaus; and travel magazines. We need always to be aware of biases and possible better alternatives. If you will share your experiences with the group, we can all get a more critical view of what to do and not to do.
