Barons spring sports preview

Golf and baseball teams prepare for play

The spring sports season for the Barons golf and baseball teams are gearing up for another year of play. Both teams have been hard at work the past two months preparing for their upcoming seasons at indoor practices.

Students from Ohio State Lima and Rhodes State College are eligible to play for the Barons. The teams compete against other colleges in the Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC). There is a regular season champion and a state tournament held each year.

Barons Golf

The Barons Golf Team had a successful 2009 season, but came just short of following up on their championship run of the previous year. Now, with only a few of the key contributors returning from last season, Head Coach Jim Maley is hoping that his new recruits can bring both energy and good play to the squad and get back up on the top of the ORCC podium.

Barons Baseball

Barons baseball entered 2009 with a lot of inexperience in every facet of the game, with the only returning player being utility man Brad Comstock. The 2010 squad, however, is vastly different as they have over half of the starting lineup from 2009 returning. This includes sophomore pitcher/infielder Chris Boyd of Lincolnview, who had an earned run average (ERA) of 3.32, a batting average of .371, and a slugging average of 1.000 in 2009.

Another key offensive and defensive contributor returning is sophomore centerfielder Adam Hemker of Delphos St. Johns. Hemker had a batting average of .351 and a slugging average of .811, while also showing excellent range and a quality arm in centerfield. Other returning members include sophomore catcher/pitcher Alan Hankinson of Lima Central Catholic, sophomore pitcher Steve Nungester of Allen East, sophomore infielder/outfielder Codie Roberts of Shawnee, and junior infielder/outfielder Andy Wisher of Spencerville.

There are also a lot of new faces on the 2010 Barons Baseball squad, and first year Head Coach Abe Ambroza is expecting a lot out of his first freshman class.

“We have a lot back from last year that I expect to contribute, but at the same time, we are going to be expecting a lot from our first year guys, too,” said Ambroza. “Our first week will be a great test for these young men as we play 10 games during the first 8 days of the schedule.”

The Barons open the season with trips to OU Chillicothe at Paints Stadium, Clark State at The Athletes in Action Baseball Complex in Xenia, NAIA-affiliated Cincinnati Christian, NAIA powerhouse University of the Cumberlands, and then a trip 15 miles east to take on NCAA Division III neighbor Ohio Northern University.

Ambroza looks forward to the challenging schedule.

“I’ve always believed that to be the best, you have to play the best,” said Ambroza. “I am very excited about the opportunity to play each and every one of these teams to open our season.”
