‘It’s About Discovery’ students concentrate on STEM topics with visit to INEOS

Students from Bath High School will visit INEOS, 1900 Fort Amanda Road, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Mon., April 26, 2010, as part of a nationwide effort to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The ninth grade science class is part of “It’s About Discovery,” an Ohio State Lima led and National Science Foundation-funded program that engages high school students and their teachers in critical thinking skills that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, or STEM, content areas. One of the goals of the program is to connect students and their learning with community partners that have STEM-related business interests. Students will come away with a real-world application of their classroom curriculum.

The INEOS team has designed a site visit directed towards critical thinking and problem solving utilizing the scientific method and the knowledge students have gained in the classroom.

The students will be challenged with a few basic science and engineering design scenarios that will put emphasis on the process and design of solutions within the engineering field. The students will use their knowledge of physics, science, chemistry and technology to design corrective systems. INEOS engineers will direct the activities and challenge the students to think about the myriad of possibilities that could be encountered in the production setting.

The students will tour the plant with INEOS engineers which will focus on the areas detailed in the exercises. This gives the students a unique learning environment to see what engineering, creativity, and critical thinking can accomplish outside of the classroom.  Most importantly, it shows the students that they are capable of succeeding in an engineering field.
