Ohio State Lima to host Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest
The Ohio State University at Lima will host the Regional Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Oratorical Contest from 1 to 4 p.m., Sat., Jan. 29, 2011, in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts in Reed Hall.
Students grades K-12 from Allen and surrounding counties will participate in the speaking contest, which focuses on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other great leaders. This year’s theme is “Build Today A Better Tomorrow.” The first three winners in each of the four divisions will move on to state competition in April 2011.
“This contest not only helps young people learn about positive role models such as Dr. King, but it makes them aspire to be great people themselves,” said Dorothy Lovell, Lima’s contest coordinator. “These students engage in the speech writing process from research to writing and memorization to presentation. It is a real confidence-booster for them.”
The MLK Statewide Oratorical Contest is an advocacy event of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission, which was established in 1985. Today the Equal Opportunity Division of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services supports the Commission.
