Retro May Week commemorates Ohio State Lima’s 50th Anniversary
The annual May Week celebration at Ohio State Lima and Rhodes State College will feature live music, games and food beginning Mon., May 2, and continuing until Fri., May 6, 2011, on the Quad. This year’s retro theme will include tie dying t-shirts, the Juggernaut Jug Band and root beer floats and will commemorate Ohio State Lima’s 50th Anniversary.
Mon., May 2
May Week kicks off with tie dying and live music. Students will be creating one-of-a-kind tie dyed t-shirts from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Jared Mahone will return to campus to perform a live concert beginning at noon. The Ohio native has been described as a “soul machine” with gospel/folk/blues/rock undertones.
Student research presenters who participated in the Undergraduate Research Forum April 27-29 will be on hand at 12:30 p.m. in the Cook Hall Library to discuss their research. Students can also vote on their favorite research project.
Tues., May 3
All students, faculty and staff are invited to get their free hot dog at 11:30 a.m. while supplies last. Off With Your Head inflatable Jousting will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., while the Juggernaut Jug Band will take center stage at 11:30 a.m. This highly entertaining band has performed since the 1960s using washboards, washtubs, kazoos and jugs to create original music with undertones of jazz, blues, ragtime and swing.
The Marketplace on the Quad will be open from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Student organizations will be selling treats and hosting a variety of activities to raise money for their clubs.
Wed., May 4
May Week participants can get their own root beer floats in May Week cups beginning at 11:30 a.m. and henna tattoos from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The Marketplace on the Quad will also be open from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The Fourth Annual All-American Baseball game will follow at 4 p.m. on the Barons Baseball diamond, pitting the students against the faculty and staff in a nine-inning contest playing by the original rules of baseball. In other words, no gloves. Hot dogs, apple pie and soft drinks will be served.
Thurs., May 5
Elvis sightings on the Quad! An Elvis impersonator and karaoke will provide entertainment from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. To close the Retro May Week, a celebration to commemorate Ohio State Lima’s 50th Anniversary will begin at 11:30 a.m. with free anniversary cake.
Fri., May 6
May Week clean up will begin at 10 a.m. and wrap up with a volunteers’ luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in Reed Hall.
Ongoing events throughout the week:
The Stars and Stripes Forever Veterans Club and the United States Army will be hosting an Army Rock Wall from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Tues.-Thurs.
The Undergraduate Research Forum will display Ohio State Lima’s undergraduate research projects in the Cook Hall Library Mon, May 2 to Fri., May 6. Students will be able to vote for the best projects and winners will receive cash prizes.
