Ohio State Lima dean honored for community service

Dr. John R. Snyder, dean and director of Ohio State Lima, was honored Thurs., Oct. 11, 2012, with the Allen County Visionaries’ Distinguished Community Service Award. He is only the third person to receive this award during the business group’s 20-year existence. It recognizes an individual’s contributions to the community through active citizenship, local board involvement and strong leadership.

Dr. Snyder was appointed Dean and Director of Ohio State Lima and a professor of Allied Medical Professions in the College of Medicine at Ohio State in 2003. A medical technologist by background, Dr. Snyder has been an active scholar in allied health education and clinical laboratory management, publishing seven books, 34 book chapters and 75 journal articles.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Snyder has served in a variety of international activities, including a Fellow for Project HOPE in Haiti, an external evaluator for Kuwait University, a curriculum consultant to the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia and laboratory trainer for PEPFAR in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Zambia, Ethiopia and South Africa. PEPFAR, or the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, is the U.S. government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally, and PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum.

Locally, he serves on the boards of the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Allen Economic Development Group, Allen County Chamber of Commerce Foundation and St. Rita’s Medical Center.

The Allen County Visionaries, Inc. serves as a private volunteer organization to promote and stimulate economic growth and development in the Allen County region through participation in all matters of business and professional interest to the community working with members of the public and private sectors.
