Valentine to open exhibition in Chicago art gallery

Ed Valentine, associate professor of art at The Ohio State University at Lima, is the featured artist at the Linda Warren Gallery in Chicago with his solo exhibition, Somebody’s Beauty, Feb.8-April 5, 2013. The opening reception for his exhibition is from 6-9 p.m., Fri., Feb. 8, 2013.

Somebody’s Beauty will feature 14 of Valentine’s portraiture paintings. The strokes of spray paint, dripping lines, flat shapes and patches of expertly rendered, highly representational features lead to no theoretical or academic conclusion; rather, they serve to spark the imagination and lead to less fixed, more complex modes of interpretation. Valentine challenges his viewers to collect and consider these disparate formal elements and glean from them moments of humor, universality, intrigue and wonder.

"Someone once told me that whenever they get close to understanding what my work is about, I seem to pull the rug out from under them," said Valentine about his Untitled Portraits, which for years continually eluded straightforward readings.

Valentine has taught drawing and painting classes at Ohio State Lima since 1997. His dedication to students earned him the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2011, which honors Ohio State faculty members for teaching excellence. Outside the classroom, he is an accomplished painter, having more than a dozen solo exhibitions in New York City and Los Angeles as well as the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, Ostrava, the Czech Republic, and the Atrium Gallery in Prague. His work has been part of group exhibitions in Paris, Tokyo and the United Arab Emirates. Valentine also has three paintings in the permanent collection of the contemporary wing at the National Gallery in Prague.
