Roundtable discussion at Ohio State Lima sheds light on college preparedness

Ohio State Lima partners with Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Board of Regents as part of State of the State tour

The Ohio State University at Lima is partnering with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) to host a roundtable discussion highlighting Ohio State Lima’s DREAM (Dare to Reach Excellence, Achievement and Meaning) program and college preparedness efforts at 3 p.m., Tues., Feb. 19, 2013, in the Visitor and Student Services Center at Ohio State Lima.

ODE Acting State Superintendent Michael Sawyers and OBR Interim Chancellor Stephanie Davidson will moderate the event, which precedes the Governor’s State of the State address in Lima that evening. The discussion will focus on improving college attendance and completion, an initiative of ODE and OBR. Ohio State Lima’s DREAM program demonstrates how this statewide initiative is working on the local level.

The DREAM program has helped dozens of at-risk Allen County high school students realize the dream of a college education since 2007. Each year, Ohio State Lima works with these students and their parents to explore opportunities in higher education and to complete their admissions and financial aid applications. After successfully completing a series of these preparatory sessions, each student receives a $1,500 scholarship, renewable for four years at Ohio State Lima.

Current DREAM participants and their parents, past DREAM graduates who are attending Ohio State Lima and the Ohio State Lima DREAM program coordinator will engage in conversation with Superintendent Sawyers and Chancellor Davidson during the roundtable discussion to talk about their experiences in the college admissions process and provide feedback regarding best practices for helping other students pursue post-secondary opportunities.

The event is free and open to the public.
