Rietenbach brings political portraits to the Farmer Family Gallery
The Ohio State University at Lima welcomes artist Tim Rietenbach, who opens his exhibition, Official, from Oct. 21-Nov. 15, 2013, in the Farmer Family Gallery in Reed Hall. The opening reception for his exhibition is from 6-8 p.m., Fri., Oct. 18, 2013.
The exhibition, Official, will feature four political portraits made of mixed mediums. A collection of works made throughout the last decade, each piece in Official was made at a different time and has not been viewed together before as a collection. The show expresses Rietenbach’s disdain for politicians. The satirical nature of these works represents a reoccurring mistrust of authority that is central to all of the work he makes.
Rietenbach describes one of the exhibition pieces, Cornography, as a representation of the bloated presence that both corn and politics have in our daily lives and, not unlike the Mona Lisa, he says the eyes in this portrait seem to follow the viewer’s every move as the smiles defy logic.
Rietenbach received his BFA in painting from the Columbus College of Art and Design and his MFA in sculpture from The Ohio State University. Rietenbach is a Professor of Fine Arts at CCAD where he teaches advanced sculpture and junior seminar. Rietenbach has received several individual artist grants from the Ohio Arts Council and Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) as well as the COSI Public Arts Project Grant from the GCAC to install Gigantic, a 100-foot sculpture of a human skeleton in the Columbus science museum. He also has received the Dresden/Saxony Residency from the GCAC and support from the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to teaching, Rietenbach serves as director of student exhibitions at CCAD.
The artwork will be on display from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., weekdays Oct. 21-Nov. 15, 2013, in the Farmer Family Gallery in Reed Hall. Both the opening reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.
