West exhibition features spiritually-based paintings at Ohio State Lima
The Ohio State University at Lima welcomes artist Pheoris West, who opens his exhibition, Pheoris West – "Icons of the Spirit" – Selected Works 1973-2013 from Jan. 24-Feb. 21, 2014, in the Farmer Family Gallery in Reed Hall. The opening reception for his exhibition is from 6-8 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 23, 2014.
The exhibition will feature paintings by the self-described Afrocentric artist who integrates the importance of a strong moral society with cultural traditions into his artwork. Throughout his career, his artwork and research have dealt with iconic imagery, beginning with simple portraiture, then enhanced by the profound influence of spiritually-based painting and sculpture. The paintings in this exhibition celebrate the human form as a divine vessel for the spirit.
West studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and received a Master of Fine Arts from Yale. He is a professor emeritus at Ohio State where he teaches painting and drawing. His work has appeared in numerous art venues, including the Philadelphia Museum, Boston Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, MuseoCivico D'Arts Contemporaneo Di Gibillina, Palermo, Italy, and the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center. Professor West served as curator of Homage to Jazz in 1999 at the Martin Luther King Center in Columbus. He has served on the National Endowment of the Arts Expansion Arts Panel, the International Juror National Exhibition of Zimbabwe and the Ohio Arts Council.
The artwork will be on display from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., weekdays Jan. 24-Feb. 21, 2014, in the Farmer Family Gallery in Reed Hall. Both the opening reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.
