St. Rita’s generous support expands program to combat childhood obesity
Ohio State Lima’s Give Me 5 helps children make healthy choices
St Rita’s Medical Center of Lima has funded The Ohio State University at Lima to continue the Give Me Five program for the 2008-2009 academic year. Give Me Five is an innovative series of classroom events designed by a community collaboration and offered by Ohio State’s K-12 Outreach Office to help reduce childhood obesity through education, physical activity and nutrition. St. Rita’s generous support will allow the program to reach Allen County’s first and third grade students at a minimal cost to the schools.
“Considering the tremendous rise in the frequency of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes, St. Rita’s commitment to Give Me Five will help improve the quality of life of future Buckeyes by promoting, protecting and providing for their health,” said Dr. Shama Amin, a Lima pediatrician instrumental in securing the funding for the expansion of Give Me Five.
Each Give Me Five classroom gets to participate in several healthy choice challenges, which are broken into three six-week periods. Teachers are asked to spend five minutes a day on a physical or nutrition challenge provided in their extensive Teacher Resource Notebooks. At the end of each challenge, classrooms are rewarded with visits, activities and prizes.
All materials are aligned to curriculum standards and school wellness plans.
The Give Me Five program started in the 2007-2008 school year with start up funding provided by an OSU Cares Grant and the Allen County Health Department. The highly popular program is currently available to Allen County K–2nd grade classrooms. The program will be able to continue for the 2008-2009 school year and reach additional students with the support of St. Rita’s. An offshoot of the Give Me Five program is currently being offered during a series of Family Fun Nights throughout Allen County, sponsored by the Allen County Health Department through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health.
