Ohio State Lima professor receives distinguished teaching award
Dr. Joseph P. Green received a big surprise when he was called to the podium earlier on the agenda than he had planned Friday during a visit by Ohio State University President Karen A. Holbrook. He thought he would be talking about Ohio State Lima student engagement in research, later. Instead, Dr. Holbrook ended her remarks to faculty and staff by announcing the latest winner of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching – Dr. Joe Green.
The award wasn’t the only surprise Holbrook had in store. OSU Alumni Association President Archie Griffin also traveled from Columbus to help present the award to Green.
Green is the latest Ohio State Lima winner of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. This is the eighth award overall and the sixth consecutive year that Ohio State Lima faculty members have won the teaching award.
Green is an associate professor of Psychology at the University. He has been at Ohio State since 1993. He is well-liked by both students and his peers and is active in campus activities and committees. He is well known for his dedication to teaching through scholarship and encourages his students to undertake undergraduate and collaborative research.
“Dr. Green is a wonderful example of our faculty’s dedication to teaching,” said Dr. John R. Snyder, dean and director of Ohio State Lima. “We are so proud of the way he helps our students to make a difference both in their own futures and in the academic community.”
The Distinguished Teaching Award is not the only achievement on Dr. Green’s plate this year. He is serving as the 2003-2004 president of the Society of Psychological Hypnosis, a division of the American Psychological Association.
The Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching was established jointly by the Alumni Association and the Development Fund in 1960. It recognizes faculty who have done a superior job of teaching. Up to ten can be selected from throughout the University system each year. Former winners from Ohio State Lima include Dr. Javad Abdalkhani, associate professor of mathematics; Dr. William V. Ackerman, associate professor of geography; Dr. David S. Adams, associate professor emeritus of sociology; Dr. Joseph E. Brandesky, professor of theatre; Dr. Allison Gilmore, associate professor of history; Dr. J. Eric Juterbock, associate professor of evolution, ecology and organismal biology; and Dr. Mohamed Yousif, associate professor of mathematics.
Recipients are nominated by students and colleagues. They are chosen by a committee of students, faculty and alumni. The committee considers questionnaires sent to former students in the nominee’s classes as well as letters of nomination.
Green will also be inducted into the Academy of Teaching, which provides leadership and encouragement of quality teaching. In addition, he will receive a cash award, an increase in base salary, and a plaque.
