Ohio State Lima welcomes big freshman class with leadership camp

Campin’ on the Quad Sunday, Sept. 17

Some of the students in one of Ohio State Lima’s largest freshman class in a decade are so excited about becoming Buckeyes that they will arrive three days early to take part in the first ever Campin’ on the Quad leadership event.

Approximately 35 students are signed up to attend the event from 9 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 17 through 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at Ohio State Lima. Autumn Quarter classes begin Sept. 20, 2006.

“We are drawing students from an ever larger geographical area and many of them are not as familiar with the Lima community. This is an opportunity for them to jump right in and begin making friends and connections,” said Beth Keehn, Director of Admissions. “Research tells us that students who get involved and make connections succeed at a much higher rate than those who don’t. This event is simply setting them up for success.”

The students participating in Campin’ on the Quad will take a tour of Lima, picnic in downtown Lima, try their hands (and feet) at the Girl Scouts low rope course and return to campus for a cookout and campfire. Ohio State Lima’s new observatory, with a telescope from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, will be open for star gazing and a giant tent is up on the Quad for a sleepover. The campfire and star gazing will begin at 7 p.m. off the gravel lot between the Reed Hall parking lot and the baseball field.

As of Sept. 15, 2006, enrollment numbers stand at 1262 with late registrations still coming in. This compares to 1145 as a final fall enrollment in 2005. New freshman are up to 363 compared to 267 in September 2005.

New and returning students have some other great things to look forward to during the 20062007 academic year:

  • Superior Federal Credit Union has installed an ATM in the Public Service Building.

·  Since this time last year, the Library in Cook Hall has added 1,327 volumes to its collection of 80,000 books, CDs and videos. This is in addition to the online access to more than 400 subscription databases available in the library.

  • Ohio State has moved up to No. 19 on the US News and World Report list of top 50 public universities.
  • The WBL Quiz Bowl competition will be coming to campus in March.
  • A feasibility study for the planned Student Activities Building is underway.
  • Athletic Director Gene Smith will be the keynote speaker for the 2007 Spring for Scholarships event April 12.
